Compare SharePoint 2007 vs 2010 site templates, I can see that there is no more collaboration publishing enterprise template which is usually used in 2007, actually, the collaboration publishing template is just application, not a really physical template as others. so, I think it's good to separate them in to atom pieces to use. and 2010 levelrage the personal site, blog, to template. so , it's more easier to build the independant sites by those templates, that more flexible.
